MVNU invites community to celebrate Black History Month

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Mount Vernon Nazarene University will host several events in celebration of African Diaspora History Month during February. The public is encouraged to attend and participate in these free events.
Two film discussions will be held on campus as a part of African Diaspora History Month. “Freedom Writers” will be shown on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 9 p.m., in Thorne Performance Hall; and “The Secret Life of Bees” will be shown Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 9 p.m., also in Thorne.
Sponsored by the Ohio Foundation of Independent College’s Project RECRUIT program and MVNU Admissions, the Slam Dunks and Slices event on Feb. 11-12 welcomes urban high school students of color overnight as they visit MVNU. A national Read-In event featuring books by African-American authors and leaders will take place on Thursday, Feb. 17, from 4-6 p.m. in the Prince Student Union. The goal is to have more than 1 million books read across the United States during February. African Diaspora History Month wraps up with SoulFest on Thursday, Feb. 24, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the Prince Student Union. With the theme of “New Orleans Culture,” this event will feature a special guests, music, henna, dancing, food, poetry reading, mask making and more.
