Cherokee singer/songwriter infuses music with meaning
October 2, 2008
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Mount Vernon Nazarene University welcomes Cherokee singer and songwriter Michael Jacobs on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m., in Prince Student Union.
This event is free and open to the public.
Jacobs' professional music career began as a songwriter and guitarist in Nashville, Tenn. After years of moderate success, he left to pursue other interests. A personal and artistic re-birth eventually led him back to music.
His debut solo CD, Sacred Nation, received the 2003 Native American Music Award for Best Independent Recording. His follow-up, They Come Dancing, was nominated in 2004. The Journey, Jacobs' third CD, received a 2006 Indian Summer Music Award, and was nominated for a 2006 Just Plain Folks Award and two 2007 Native American Music Awards.
Aptly named, Mystery is Jacobs' latest work and it is as diverse thematically as it is musically. Covering topics from the environment and politics to the ecstasy and agony of life and relationships, Mystery is filled with powerful tenderness and poignancy.
Jacobs is not interested simply in educating people about Native American culture or "Native" issues, but his songs address human issues. His music soothes, encourages and challenges listeners. His blend of Native American and American "roots" music, a mixture of pop, rock and folk, artfully fuses contemporary and traditional sounds and powerful imagery.
He is a member of the Recording Academy and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. As an accomplished musician, writing great songs remains his sole desire and fuels his ambition.
To learn more about this event, or call (740) 397-9000, ext. 4341. Sampels of Jacobs’ music may be heard on his Web site at www.sacrednation.com.
